Small family owned business to a major international brand

Posting date: 30/08/2021

In 1961 Karl and Theo Albrecht realised they each had different ideas for the business. Although they remained close, the decision was made to split operations into two. When Karl later opened stores in southern Germany and Theo opened them in the north, the media named the businesses ALDI Süd and ALDI Nord.

In 1962 Karl and Theo both opened their first stores that were named ALDI (Albrecht Discount) and continued their successful business strategy of offering a limited range of quality products at low prices. The ALDI concept worked very well and was rolled out across Germany.

In 1967 ALDI Süd acquired a retail chain named Hofer, which continues to operate approximately 500 stores across seven regions in Austria today. Our next international expansion occurred in the US in 1976, with stores opened in Iowa and Illinois. Our first UK stores were opened in 1990, and today we have more than 950 stores across the UK and Ireland.

As we continued to grow, our first Aussie stores were opened in 2001 and we now have more than 560 stores in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

ALDI Nord now has more than 5,000 stores in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Spain.

ALDI Süd has more than 6,000 stores in ten countries including Australia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, UK, Ireland and China.

In 108 years, we went from a small family owned business to a major international brand.
