The beginning
The beginning
In 1913 Anna Albrecht opened a small food store in Essen, Germany. In 1948, her sons took over the store and expanded into 4 locations. In 1962, it was time for a new name. Albrecht Discount was shortened to 'ALDI' By 1968 there were more than 200 locations across Germany and Austria.

In 1976, we opened our first US store in Iowa. In 1990 we expanded to the UK. In the early 2000s we expanded into Australia, Slovenia and Hungary.
2001
2001
We opened our first two Australian stores at Bankstown Airport and Marrickville in the Greater Sydney area on January 25 2001. Eager customers took their place in the queue to get up-close-and-personal with our unique brand, ‘Smarter Shopping’- which meant exclusive branded products and consistently low prices. By the end of 2001 we'd opened 22 stores across NSW.
2003
2003
With our NSW and ACT presence continuing to grow, it was VIC's turn for some ALDI stores, with the first VIC store being Heidelberg West. We also raised a special glass to Victorians by introducing our first local liquor sales to select locations.

2011
2011
Our customers loved Special Buys™ so much, that we added a second Special Buys™ sale date to every week of the year. Wednesdays and Saturdays have been the best day of the week ever since.
